Most trilobite fossils are fragments of discarded exoskeletons - complete specimens generally being rather uncommon. Fossils were often sold to collectors, either by fellow collectors or by local quarrymen. Complete trilobites have always been particularly desirable, and always commanded a far better price than did fragments.
