Well as you explained it based on empires waking up they used to be forced awake by the war in heaven mid game crisis it was even labeled a mid game crisis in the files. Therefore they did move the mid game crisis from being mid game. They added artificial barriers that are broken when endgame arrives.

Stellaris plays better with an earlier endgame date. As I browse the discussions of the game, the 3 biggest problems seem to be AI not being challenge, painful end game micro, and late game lag. I have not felt these problems has bad as others, largely because pretty early in my stellaris career I set my end game year to 2300 rather then 2400.

There are multiple options available in Stellaris for purging but most are blatantly genocidal and therefore result in most of the galaxy despising you for your genocidal tendencies. There is one exception to this and that is displacement.
