Expertise's power scales as you level, at the start it's a +2 bonus and by level 20 it's a +6 bonus. In the bounded accuracy system 5e uses, this is a pretty big deal. I think it really varies, though. For a rogue, having expertise in stealth is kind of important. For a Cleric, having expertise in religion isn't really that big of a deal.
