Oct 11, 2021 · A Brief History. Before becoming the University of Tampa, it was known as the Tampa Bay Hotel. The hotel was built between 1888 and 1891 and cost a whopping $3 million to construct. Plant had no investors and all of it was funded himself. What’s fascinating about this hotel was that it was more than just a hotel. Plant Museum is located on the left wing of the former Tampa Bay Hotel and the rest of the building is now called Plant Hall and is utilized by the University of Tampa. The building hosting the museum is a National Historic Landmark, the former Tampa Bay Hotel, built in 1891 by Henry Bradley Plant, a railroad and shipping magnate.
