Phrase structure rules are a formal hypothesis for representing constituency using rules. They indicate what each type of constituent must contain and what they may optionally contain. In this kind of template, X, Y, and Z are variables representing any category such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions, determiners, etc.
