Phrase structure rules are a formal hypothesis for representing constituency using rules. They indicate what each type of constituent must contain and what they may optionally contain. In this kind of template, X, Y, and Z are variables representing any category such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions, determiners, etc.

Head-driven phrase struc- ture grammar (HPSG) is the state of the art in what Pullum and Zwicky (1991) have called category-based syntax, and this book makes available to a wide audience recent developments in a grammatical framework used extensively in syntactically oriented research in natural language processing. We use tree diagrams to make specific and testable claims (hypotheses) about the structure of phrases and sentences. Thinking back to Section 6.1, one way of thinking about the goal of syntactic theory is that it’s aiming to account for what languages users know about which sentences are grammatical, and which sentences are ungrammatical. Transformations alter phrase structure; that is, they delete things, insert things, and move things around. The result is a new phrase structure. The standard theory of Syntactic Structures and especially of Aspects of the Theory of Syntax employed a phrase-structure grammar—a grammar in which the syntactic elements of a language are defined by means of rewrite rules that specify their smaller constituents (e.g., “S → NP + VP,” or “a sentence may be rewritten as a noun phrase ...A post hoc rating test with eight musicians confirmed that the phrase structure of the stimuli of the pilot experiment was less clearly perceived.
