Phosphate vs nitride

Oh yeah, coatings can get crazy. I’d generally stick to phosphate, nitride, or DLC. NiB is mostly a gimmick imo. Unless you find some solid offerings that use the other coatings and you’re willing to pay for them, like the SIONICS NP3, KAC Sandcutter, BCM’s FDE Ionbond, or Cryptic’s Mystic Black, those 3 general coatings would be what I would consider for my builds.

Phosphate vs nitride. They are completely different metal treatments. I think most people would agree Nitride is generally superior for firearm parts. It's smoother and more resistant to corrosion. Great article. I always get nitride but after reading that I'd be open to phosphate and for a certain look/ use it might be preferable.

I have BCM phosphate coated BCGs and I have a Rubber City Armory (RCA) black nitride coated BCG and all of which I shoot suppressed. The RCA BCG cleans up a hell of a lot easier than the traditional phosphate coated BCGs. I have also owned a Fail Zero but never shot it suppressed but it too cleaned up a lot easier than phosphate.

The preparation of phosphate-based adhesives requires the synthesis of a phosphate solution. In accordance with a P to Al molar ratio of 3:1, aluminum hydroxide (Aladdin AR) and phosphoric acid (concentration of 60 wt%, Tianjin Tianli Chemical Reagent Co., Ltd. AR) were weighed and mixed together with a magnetic stirrer for approximately 1 h in a water bath at 80 °C.Pool Phosphate Removal Tips: 1. Before testing for phosphates, water should be balanced, and chlorine level below 5 ppm. 2. Algae should be treated and pool clean before testing and treating phosphates. 3. Correct the source of the phosphate contamination, or use weekly maintenance dosage. 4.Just a few of the articles I have read can be found with a quick search and many more I'm sure with some digging around. In comparison of wear and corrosion restistence there is no way in hell that an untreated exterior barrel steel is tougher or more corrosion resistant than a nitride barrel when coated with phosphate.Andylate5. In the PSA Freedom line, I prefer nitride because the phosphate freedom barrels are not chrome lined. The nitride treatment makes the steel more wear and corrosion resistant. 6. Personally I like nitride, but there are some possible problems with it. I've read that the nitriding process heats the metal to over 1000 deg F.DLC vs Nitride What are the pro's and con's of these applications, for a rifle action. I have to wipe it down with CLP because out of the box the bolt looked nitride in finish and even after wiping down it still was very smooth black finish so I popped out the bolt and looked into the carrier to see if it was chrome lined. The bolt is very well finished and the phosphate is very smooth almost looks like a matte nitride finish.phosphate vs. nitride barrels: why coat? before we go into detail about phosphate coatings vs nitride on ar barrels, let’s take a look at why you’d even coat your barrel in the first place. leaving an ar barrel “in the white” or uncoated exposes the steel to the elements and to possible damage. a coating will protect the barrel and make ...IMO, the Black Nitride finish is the best bang for the buck of the black BCG finishes. It is a super hard finish that runs smooth and is both easy to clean and easy on the wallet. For a comparison of the top 3 black BCG finishes see our article The Best Black BCG Finish - Phosphate vs Nitride vs DLC .The nitride process heats the steel up then dissolves nitrogen into the steel... Long story short, the nitrogen only goes (with any serious concentration) maybe .005-.010" into the surface, and the nitrogen atoms act like gravel in gears (the gears being Fe and C atoms in the crystalline structure of the steel) and prevent movement on an atomic ...Phosphate, AKA parkerizing, is an external surface coating that somewhat improves corrosion resistance, darkens the metal, and gives a harder rough finish. …CL barrels have a phosphate outer finish that SUCKS (scratches easily, is NOT corrosion resistant w/o constant oil wipes, etc). Nitride is cheaper AND better than CL in my book. I'm actually as happy with my Ptac nitride middy as I am with my FN CHF/CL middy, and that's saying a lot.Barbell coatings are a great way to enhance or maintain the look of a barbell. Nitride is a nitrogen compound in which nitrogen has a proper oxidation condition of −3. Nitrides are an enormous class of compounds with a wide scope of properties and applications. In chemistry, a phosphide is a compound containing the P3− particle or its same. Various phosphides have varying designs.Stainless steel gives better accuracy but at the cost of lower overall barrel life. That being said the average shooter doesn't shoot enough or accurately enough to benefit from stainless steel. Nitride from a production standpoint is also easier to make and generally translates to cheaper barrels/uppers but exceptions do exist. 2 Likes.Andylate5. But for low round counts and semi you can easily get 20,000 out of almost any barrel. As far as nitrided barrels go, numerous barrels in the IC Featured this and none showed any marked increase in barrel life.

Easy cleaning is easy, mil-spec phosphate is the strongest finish by a country mile. I used to think in the mode of Paper vs 2 or 4 legged critters. Nitride lets you compete with the beauty queens, mil=spec phosphate has never been the reason someone didn't come home or not be able to chose: between the eyes or left/right pupil. For a 1 M buffer (selected to make the calculation easy), [Acid] + [Base] = 1. [Base] = 1 - [Acid]. Prepare the solution by mixing 0.477 moles of monosodium phosphate and 0.523 moles of disodium phosphate in a little less than a liter of water. Check the pH using a pH meter and adjust the pH as necessary using phosphoric acid or sodium hydroxide.Just a few of the articles I have read can be found with a quick search and many more I'm sure with some digging around. Got about $340 in this gun. The barrel may not last as long but this is a low volume gun and if you put 10k on it to burn it up you got your money worth IMO. The nitride looks weird with the phosphate FSB IMO so if you're going nitride get a FF rail version like ... Firearm Discussion and Resources from AR-15, AK-47, Handguns and more! The chemical phosphate conversion coating results in a dark gray to black finish with anti-reflective properties and almost no increase in dimensions.Regular and phosphate are the same, phosphate is the mil spec coating. Similarly, nitride and melonite are the same thing. Phosphate is just fine, requires plenty of lube, but will last a long time. Nitride is a chemical treatment of steel that hardens the steel quite a bit (just the outer layer) and leaves a very smooth finish that has some ...Nitride is generally better. Phosphate is essentially parkerization, nitride is harder and more corrosion resistant. Chrome lining is a superior bore treatment - by a little bit and for some use cases - but phosphate is a vastly inferior exterior treatment for longevity and corrosion. And because it is two processes, it costs more vs 1 single ...Nitride is pretty well established to be a sufficient substitute for chrome, assuming the surface dimensions are specified correctly for nitride treatment. Chrome has a known good track record, with only old Colt managing to really screw it up enough that they asked to change to chrome internal lining and phosphate, giving us the Milspec BCG we ...May 16, 2017 · Phosphate is a dull grey color and usually a little rougher. Nitride is usually black or blue and very smooth. One of nitrides positive attributes is that it is very slick and corrosion resistant. Author: Skip Schaefer In my 51 years of heating aqueous based chemical solutions, heating phosphates is the toughest without a doubt. And we're not talking about historical Parkerizing a gun. Most quality metal finishers dip the metal into a hot bath, rather than spray the phosphate coating. You still have to get a good blank. What I am saying is that unlike chrome, it doesn't make the barrel's accuracy WORSE. Both extend life similarly. Hence, nitride is the superior treatment unless you have a belt-fed where chrome really starts to shine. Outisde of that, nitride is basically always a better choice all else being equal.Today I have a mini post to share with you some light accuracy testing of the PSA 20 inch nitrided barrel assembly. Accuracy testing can be a chore, but this is more of a mini-assessment. The factory PSA upper is a flat top, nitrided, 20-inch rifle length system in 1/7 twist. The only change to the upper out of the box is a Magpul handguard.Phosphate provides better results than nitride and BCM is a better brand than toolcraft. So the answer is pretty easy.I was wondering if if the difference matters between gas block finishes (nitride vs phosphate). All the nitride finish Aero gas blocks are sold out and the last two parts I need for my 6.5 build is a tube and block. Just was curious if you guys had any advice on whether or not it matters for the gas block. Thanks! Black manganese phosphate conversion coatings are considered to be more durable than grey zinc phosphate coatings, but the difference is not great. Under anaerobic conditions in which bacteria persist in the oxidation of biological material, hydrogen sulfide is produced. When anoxic conditions exist in the deep waters just above the sediments, and the water is acidic enough to precipitate the iron present, hydrogen sulfide occurs.Quoted: Nitride is a harder and slicker finish than phosphate. Nitride will wear better, last longer, and have less friction than phosphate. There's a reason metal cutting tools (end mills, boring bar inserts, etc) have nitride coatings instead of phosphate.
