The RAW on this is a little loose. Using Detect Magic without heightening it doesn't guarantee you'll know if a specific item in a collection of items is magical. It seems like it's more narrative driven as detect magic is suggested as an exploration activity, and identifying magic items takes ten minutes, so it would be exploration as well.
