Nike of paionios

It’s not so much the Nike of Paionios, the Hermes of Praxiteles or the terracotta statue of Zeus grasping Ganymede, the reason I keep returning there. It is these pediment sculptures.

Nike of paionios. The sculptor of the statue is known to be Paionios of Mende, who utilized Parian marble to make the sculpture. Parian marble was held in very high regards for the ancient Greeks, known for its pure-white and semi-translucent qualities. Nike at Olympia is believed to be built around 425-450 BCE.

The Nike of Paionios is erected at Olympia to commemorate the Messenian and Naupaktian victory over Sparta at the battle of Sphakteria. 340 BCE. Praxiteles sculpts his Aphrodite, the first full female nude in Greek sculpture. c. 330 BCE. Statue of Hermes sculpted by Praxiteles.
