Kansas designated Pteranodon as the official state flying fossil in 2014 (Tylosaurus became the official state marine fossil). The wingspan of this extinct reptile was over 24 feet! All State Fossils Pteranodon was the first pterosaur found in the United States. Fossils were found by Othniel Charles Marsh in 1871 in the Smoky Hill Chalk deposits of western Kansas.
