Later an approach was made to Milford Street. The history of the first two bridges built across the Juniata River is practically lost. The first bridge was built in 1831.

At 1:15 p.m., the Juniata River began to overflow its banks. It took until 6 p.m. the next day for the river to crest, at 42 feet 1 inch, short of the 1936 flood level of 43 feet 5 inches. The aftermath was disastrous, with physical, emotional and economic scars lasting a lifetime for many.
