Indesign number pages

New Here , Oct 22, 2023. I am trying to make a 16 page booklet and when I try to do the page numbering either all my page numbers say A or just the first one will say A. I am clicking Type> insert special character > markers> current page number and it's not working. I know I'm missing something but everything I look at or watch just says to do ....
