If you're curious about the math, greatswords average 7 damage and greataxes average 6.5. Not a huge difference, but 1 point of damage has been make-or-break in the past. The way that the Brutal Critical Barbarian class feature is worded, the crits for greataxes are far more powerful, which is nice as weapons don't have different critical features.
