Community participatory research
In community participatory research, the community is the primary unit of research and participation 4, 5. “Individuals belong to larger, socially contrasted identities that shape strengths, challenges, and disparities” 6 that therefore need to be built into research to create a complete and valid picture of an issue affecting a community.
Community-based participatory research (CBPR) attempts to address these glaring disparities by engaging communities in the research development, design, and implementation lifecycle, thereby addressing the social, cultural, and environmental contexts of communities.
Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) is a participatory, cooperative process between community members and researchers in the research process. Both contribute equally to the research process and the approach requires co-learning for systems development and capacity building (Minkler, 2010).
