Geology rock layers

Sedimentary rocks occur as parallel or nearly parallel layers, or beds. Beds vary in thickness (<1 to 10s of feet) and spatial distribution (<1 to 10s of miles). Beds that commonly occur together or have similar characteristics and distribution are lumped together by geologists and called "formations."
